It is in a setting like this that Wasseypur introduces us to its passel of characters, and the two men whose enmity will decide the fate of their families and foes. There’s history here, of the kind almost never attempted by Hindi cinema, bouyed beautifully by geography : the locations are part of the pleasures of the film. Those who toiled and laboured became poorer, those who lorded over the worker drones with swords, and lathis and brute force, flourished. In the first flush of ‘azaadi’, those who thought their lives were going to get better were proved miserably wrong. It tells us how coal (‘koyla’, much more poetic) was one of the country’s precious natural resources which was captured for the betterment of few : first by the British overlords, and then by the local mafia, which hijacked the ‘khadaans’ (mines) and monstrous gains and became the resident fat cats. From 1941, to the present day (it breaks off in the middle the rest of it will come to theatres next month, in the second part). I liked most of ‘Gangs’, Part One, enormously. It’s not so much about gangs, as about men who are pushed into ‘gangstergiri’ as a thing to live by as you go along, you see that Wasseypur is not just a place, but a state of mind, which roars and strikes after each deceptively quiet patch. It reunites Anurag Kashyap with exactly the kind of style he is most comfortable with : hyper masculine, hyper real, going for the jugular. ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ is a sprawling, exuberant, ferociously ambitious piece of film making, which hits most of its marks. The fact remains that Gangs of Wasseypur is the OG that started it all, and no one can ever replace its legacy.Cast: Manoj Bajpai, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Richa Chaddha, Reema Sen, Piyush Mishra, Jameel Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, Vineet Singh, Nawazudin Siddique, Humra Quraishi, Anurita Jha, Jaideep Ahlwat

Every scene has been choreographed so well it actually gives you the feeling of those poor, low class families from suburban areas. The acting by literally everyone is phenomenal, such that it inspired memes for years to come, and that's being in a good way. The bad guys really make you feel like killing them, and the way they speak is very reminiscent of the villages from Bihar and east UP. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Faisal is introduced in the second part after the demise of Sardar Khan. In the beginning it feels like Sardar Khan is supposed to be the hero, but slowly he's shown to be a terrible person who gets in fights with everyone and marries a second time just because he's getting horny. But as the story progresses, the line between the good and bad people blurs to the point where it doesn't exist anymore. When the film begins, it seems like it will be the same old, generic good guy vs bad guy movie.

This is the best gangster movie Bollywood has ever made, and that's saying something since Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai also exists. When the film begins, it seems like it will be the same old, generic good I didn't know who Anurag Kashyap was before I saw this film. I didn't know who Anurag Kashyap was before I saw this film.
